The 1st Marine Division Band, based at Camp Pendleton, California, consists of 50 Marine musicians. While the primary mission of the 1st Marine Division Band is to provide musical support for military parades and ceremonies, they remain versatile in order to accommodate a wide variety of musical requests. In addition to the Ceremonial Band and Concert Band, smaller ensembles are formed such as Big Band, Rock Band, Jazz Combo, Brass Quintet, and Party Band.
2013 marks Long Beach Junior Concert Band’s 61st year marching in the parade and the 47th year leading Santa Claus! The band from Long Beach, California is under the direction of Phil Nakagawa. Formed in 1952, the band has captured over 1,500 Sweepstakes and First place awards. The band has appeared in numerous television commercials and toured Hawaii and Japan.
The Beckman High School Patriot Marching Band performs under the direction of Jim Kollias. Beckman High School is proud to present its award winning 150 member Patriot Marching Band. A two-time California Distinguished School, Beckman High School has established a tradition of academic excellence and maintaining a strong music program. The Patriot Marching Band has performed throughout California and regularly earns Sweepstakes Awards for their performances. In 2008, the Patriot Marching Band earned an invitation to perform at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington D.C., appearing on regional TV, and also performed at the World War II and Jefferson Memorials. On New Year’s Eve in 2008, the band appeared on MTV’s “A Miley Sized Surprise” which aired nationally. In 2010, the band became the first Orange County band to appear in the Kingdom Day Parade in Los Angeles appearing on ABC and winning Sweepstakes. This year’s drum major is Nick Clemens.
The Porterville Panther band performs under the direction of Jim Kusserow and is one of the most successful and celebrated bands in the United States. The Panther Band has made it a practice to perform for the American people and teach the importance of our history and heritage by performing in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. at least once every decade. The Porterville Panther Band is a source of pride for not only the citizens of Porterville California, but the citizens of the United States of America.
The Bellflower High School Buccaneer Brigade performs under the direction of Mr. Omar Vidana. The Buccaneer Brigade has been performing and competing all over southern California since 1951 when the school first opened. They have traveled to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Nevada, San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle to compete against bands from all over the nation. The Brigade just came back from fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada where again they competed against bands from all over the nation earning a superior rating on their performance. The band consists of 9th-12th grade students who put at least ten hours a week of their time to practice and perfect their art which is parade and field tournament performances.
The PAVA World Korean Traditional Band is the first Korean traditional band arranged as a marching band in 110 years of Korean immigration history. It is comprised of 7 ethnic instruments, traditional dancers, and traditional flag bearers. There are 160 Korean American second generation participants from all over Southern California. The band participated in the 2011 and 2012 Hollywood Christmas Parade and will be participating in the 2013 Rose Parade.
The Mayfair High School Monsoon Marching Corps perform under the direction of Thomas Philips and assistant band director Jeff de Seriere. The band is led by senior drum major Melanie Barnett, who will bring them in heir parade march: H.M. Jollies by Kenneth Alford. These champions of music have earned sweepstakes honors in parades and field show tournaments for the past 13 years. The 160-member band and color guard will be performing in the Hawaii Invitational Music Festival in the spring of 2014.Fun Fact: The most famous graduate of Mayfair High School is the current Los Angeles Police Chief, Charlie Beck.
The East Coweta Marching Indians perform under the direction of Mr. Robert Owens. The East Coweta High School Marching Indians have represented Georgia in the London New Year’s Day parade, the Rome Italy New Year’s Day Parade, The Waikiki Holiday Parade, The Fiesta Bowl Parade, The Citrus Bowl Parade, and have been in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City two times. They have also been selected as a finalist the past three years in Bands of America Regional and Super Regional Competitions. Fun Fact: Nate Navarro, previous band member is a drummer for Cobra Starship.
The Beverly Hills High School marching band has been in existence since the 1950’s and is the largest spirit ensemble on campus. The Band’s primary performance venues have been annual performances at Disneyland Resort, the BHHS home football games, and various community events. Last year, under the direction of Mr. Bill Bradbury, the band accepted an invitation to the prestigious London New Year’s Day Parade and music festival, 2013. The band performed both at the parade and one of the Christmas Concerts at Cadogan Hall.
Located outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Sapulpa Chieftain Marching Band is Sapulpa High School’s competitive marching ensemble and is comprised of student’s grades 9-12. Honors of the band include Class Champion at the Henryetta Labor Day Parade in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, 1st place for out of town band at the Washington DC St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2012, and Superior Ratings at the OSSAA Regional Marching Competition in 2010 and 2012. The Sapulpa Chieftain Marching Band is under the direction of Craig Amendt, with assistance from directors Brent Baldwin and Michelle Barnes, percussion directors Chris Matthews and Dr. James Clanton, colorguard instructor Dallas Johnston, and department secretary Raelyn McDonald.
The Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums consists of members who are active, former, or retired law enforcement officers from law enforcement agencies throughout the Southern California area. Individuals with no prior law enforcement background are also a vital part of the Band; the only condition is that they have a sincere desire to support the law enforcement community and be of good moral and ethical character. The Band respectfully plays at services, memorials, and tributes for police officers, firefighters, and military personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We support law enforcement, firefighters, and the military by playing at any event that will serve the respective agency or organization.
The Los Angeles Catholic Schools Band is the brainchild of Eric Hankey, Chris Adachi, Ken Hoffman, Dave Gonzalez, and Rosemary Libbon, and was formed in 2013 to showcase the musicians and performers of the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, specifically by bringing a large marching band performance unit to major parades and other events. In continuing affirmation of the mission statement of the archdiocese, this band will help build a community of faith and love through the support of the collaborative effort of our young people in a high-visibility ensemble.
Kaiser High School is home to the Catamount Pride marching band, under the direction of Anthony Allmond. In 2008 they won sweepstakes in the Azusa Golden Days Parade, sweepstakes in the Riverside King Band Review, 2nd place in the Chino Band Review, sweepstakes and the music award in the Ganeesha Band Review, and 1st place in the Arcadia Band Review.
The Granada Hills Charter High School Highlander Marching Band is proud to present the Granada Hills Highlander Band. Wearing black and white tartan, clan Menzies kilts, the Highlanders are the official musical ambassadors of the United Scottish Societies Highland Games and Festivals.
The band has performed in such prestigious events as the 2002 Winter Olympics, KIIS FM’s “Wango Tango”, live on Nickelodeon with Will Smith for the “Kids Choice Awards,” 4 command performances at the Portland Rose Festival, and live performances at Universal Studios, Disneyland Resorts, Paramount Studios, and WarnerBros. Productions. They also performed live for ABC and FOX television. They have appeared in major motion pictures like “Dodgeball”, televisions shows such as “The Gilmore Girls”, MTV’s “Rock Your World”, and PBS ”California’s Gold.”
The Gadsden Elementary School District #32 Marching Band is from San Luis, Arizona which is located in the Southwest corner of the State on the border of San Luis Rio Colorado,
Mexico: and is composed of approximately 200 students. The Gadsden Marching Band has been highly recognized nationwide. They recently participated in the Twenty-Seventh Annual New
Year’s Day Parade and Festival in London, England on January 1, 2013. They had also participated in the Fiesta Bowl Parade, and Hollywood Parade on December 2011.
The Greenwood Band and Irish Guard are from Greenwood, Indiana. The Greenwood Band performs under the direction of John Morse, Steven Fletcher, Donald Kalugyer, and Pamela Smith. This will be the 4th appearance for the Marching Woodmen in The Hollywood Christmas Parade. In 2010, the band earned the honor of Indiana State Champion in class B. The band has also earned high honors at Bands of America events including qualifying for Bands of America Grand National semi-finals in 2012. Mr. Morse along with his fellow staff of the Marching Woodmen is very proud of the strong traditions at Greenwood. Together, the band department has earned all of the above accolades and has been named an ISSMA all music award recipient from 2009-2013.
The award-winning Crescenta Valley High School Marching Falcons are a powerful presence in the community. They perform at every varsity football game and compete in Band Reviews and Field Shows throughout Southern California. The Falcon Band is under the direction of Mr. Mathew Schick; Drum Major, Melissa Kim; Assistant Drum Majors, Makayla Matheu and Joseph Stiles; and Color Guard Captain, Elizabeth Hwang. In 2013, the Falcon Band earned several 1st Place awards at Field Show competitions, and a highest Music Performance score at the 2013 SCJA State Championships while their Percussion group (Drum Line and Pit musicians) earned a Top 3 out of all 46 Percussion groups! The band has performed in many prestigious events over the years including Disney’s 2012 Community Showcase Parade at Disneyland. The Crescenta Valley High School Marching Falcons will also be performing in their community’s 2013 Montrose Christmas Parade as well as Disney’s 2013 Community Showcase Parade at California Adventure later this year. This band is a non-audition group that meets every day at 6:45am in the beautiful Crescenta Valley.
