The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Color Guard is the ceremonial and public-facing arm of the National Society SAR, proudly bringing the spirit of the American Revolution to life. The Color Guard traces its origins to 1875, when early SAR members first assembled in colonial attire to help celebrate America’s 100th birthday. Nearly a century and a half later, the tradition continues stronger than ever as we prepare to commemorate America’s 250th birthday.
Members of the Color Guard appear in historically inspired uniforms representing the soldiers, militia, and patriots of 1775–1783. Their mission is to honor the legacy of the American Revolution through participation in parades, ceremonies, wreath presentations, civic events, educational programs, and Patriot grave markings.
As members of the SAR, Guardsmen are direct descendants of individuals who fought for or contributed to American independence—including soldiers, sailors, civil officials, and those who offered material aid to the cause of liberty. Each appearance serves as a living tribute to their Patriot ancestors and an opportunity to inspire future generations with the values of courage, service, and patriotism.
The Color Guard also proudly includes participants from the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.), the nation’s oldest and largest youth-led patriotic organization. These young members represent the next generation of leadership and carry forward the same legacy of honor, heritage, and service. Their involvement strengthens the connection between youth and history, ensuring that the story of America’s founding continues to be shared and celebrated.
The SAR is a non-profit, lineage-based, historical, and educational organization open to men who can trace their ancestry to a Patriot of the American Revolution. Individuals who believe they may have a qualifying ancestor are encouraged to explore membership; the SAR offers guidance and support throughout the genealogical and application process.
Today’s Color Guard proudly continues a tradition that extends from America’s 100th celebration to its upcoming 250th. Through service, education, youth engagement, and remembrance, we honor the past while helping shape a patriotic future for our communities.
