The Segunda Unidad Macaná Marching Band (SUM), from Escuela Segunda Unidad Gloria M. Borrero Olivera in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, was founded in 2007 under the direction of Armando L. Borrero. The band brings together young musicians, color guard members, and dancers, combining musical performance, choreography, discipline, and Puerto Rican culture.
Throughout its history, SUM has represented Puerto Rico at major events in the United States and internationally, including the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City (2011), the Magic Kingdom Main Street Parade at Walt Disney World (2015), and the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade (2018). In 2023, the band traveled to Europe, performing at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, where Pope Francis personally greeted the group and asked to hear them perform, followed by their participation in the International Festival of Musical Bands and Majorettes in Giulianova, Italy, where SUM received the Best Marching Band Choreography Award.
In 2025, SUM continued its international journey by representing Puerto Rico in Castellón, Spain. Through each performance, the band proudly carries the music, energy, and cultural identity of Puerto Rico while providing its students with opportunities to grow through music, teamwork, discipline, and international experiences.
