The Dodge City High School Band Program, proudly known as the “Pride of Southwest Kansas,” has built a distinguished tradition of musical excellence, community pride, and memorable performance experiences for generations of students.
Based in Dodge City, Kansas, the program has long served as an important part of the school’s fine arts tradition, with students performing at athletic events, community celebrations, marching competitions, concerts, and major destination events across the country. The marching band has become especially well known for representing Dodge City and the State of Kansas on prominent stages far beyond Southwest Kansas.
Among the most notable moments in the program’s history are its two appearances in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The band first marched in the Rose Parade in 1961, serving as an official representative of Kansas during the state’s centennial year, and returned to Pasadena for a second Rose Parade appearance in 1976. These performances remain significant milestones in the band’s history and reflect the national reputation the program has developed over the decades.
The band’s tradition of destination performances has continued into more recent generations. Dodge City students have represented their school and community in Orlando, Florida, including an appearance in the Citrus Bowl Parade, performances at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and participation in the Universal Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s at Universal Orlando Resort. These opportunities have allowed students to experience professional performance environments while sharing the pride and spirit of Dodge City with audiences from around the world.
Under the leadership of longtime Director of Bands Jason Richins, the program continues to emphasize musicianship, discipline, teamwork, and meaningful experiences for its students. Major travel and performance opportunities have become an important part of that tradition, providing generations of Dodge City musicians with experiences they can carry with them long after graduation.
Whether performing under the Friday night lights in Dodge City, marching through the streets of Pasadena or Orlando, or representing Southwest Kansas on a national stage, the Dodge City High School Band continues to honor its legacy while creating new traditions for the future. Today, the Pride of Southwest Kansas remains a source of pride for Dodge City High School, its alumni, families, and the entire Dodge City community.
